Structure of a Scientific Literature Review

What is a Scientific Literature Review?

As the name suggests, a scientific literature review comprises of scientific papers on a given topic. It involves the analysis and interpretation of existing research and aims to provide relevant information and answers to questions related to that. Scientific literature review helps to narrow down to specific questions and provide recommendations that contribute to the study’s specific subject matter.

Research on the components that are responsible for the problem and the effect that the proposed solution has is not mandatory. However, having a copy of the topic covers all the bases in presenting a well-polished science review. In any case, the reader will see that the primary purpose of the paper is not to evaluate whether the paper can be proven or not. They are mostly to look into the importance, critical review, and recommendations of the literature.

A paper that has been reviewed includes the author(s), the date of publication, source, title of the paper, course of the work, and specific problem the study has been exploring. If the paper is an abstract, then it should be no more than 150 words long. If it is a longer paper, then it has the right to 150 to 500 words.

When is a Scientific Literature Review Needed?

The purpose of a scientific literature review can be fulfilled in numerous ways. Some of the common ways where a scientific literature review is needed include;

  1. Current state of science.

A scientific literature review is a precursor of any new research done by someone, to inform the reader that something has been discovered or proven. It is a single sentence written shortly after a scientific experiment has been done. Therefore, it gives a summary of the results of the experiment, review the results, and give the reader the findings of what has been discovered. On the other hand, if the paper is a literature review for previous research work, it should be at least three sections. The first section is the abstract, which provides brief information about the paper. Then follow the inclusion of the author and the publishing institution for use in references. The second part is the introduction, which gives an overview of the whole work, the terms of reference, and the purpose of the paper.

  1. Mathematical modeling.

The mathematical modeling allows a group of researchers to relate previous literature with the new scientific understanding. Sometimes, it is used to make the conclusions drawn from the analysis of the research related to the problem. If it’s a long paper, then it can have several chapters that involve the numerical modeling, analysis, and interpretation of the findings.

  1. Tabling of the topic. The topic is a straight forward topic or one that is not too deep. It should not be too broad or have too much explaining.

Lastly, a scientific literature review can be used for gathering feedback from other researchers on the same topic. Research needs to be at least two to three pages long. All sections of the study should be numbered, and the annotations should be double spaced.
